There is a real misunderstanding about what, where, and when photographers may take photographs. I found this interesting video on YouTube about a protest in Los Angeles by photographers.

Basically it's a mash up of stories and personal anecdotes of photographers and their personal stories of being harassed and questioned while taking photographs. It fails to give all the real information but it's interesting none-the-less.

If you're interested in knowing what your rights are exactly then you should visit the site by Attorney Bert P. It's not that I haven't had much to say, but rather that I just have way too many thoughts. You see I'm always trying to think of better ways to bring you better photography - and package it in a way that I think you might love. I unfortunately forget to post the thoughts here.

My lack of posting also is a shame because as of lately (I'm blaming the economy) business has been rather slow. So forgive me twice.

So with that in mind, I'll need to get in the habit of posting on a regular basis and so I have a few topics that'll be posting in the on-coming weeks.

1) I have a video from YouTube that I'd like to show you regarding photographers rights. Every once and a while, under a blue moon mind you, I do get asked about the legal side of photography. What are and aren't you allowed to photograph while holding a camera in a public place. I think you'll find it interesting.

2) Also, I've come up with something new for you high school seniors... and guess what? It won't cost you a penny more. Do you wanna hint?

3) Thinking about seniors - I created a poll on Facebook regarding what seniors want in photography. The results contained great information from 99 people and I'll be sharing that with you. I'm sure the other professional photographers that visit my site will like the information as well... you know who you are!

4) I'll also be posting information on why I charge what I do and what that means for you. For those that shop on price alone, you'll want to read what I have to share.

Well that should get me through the next month I think. Unless of course you have something else that you'd love to hear my thoughts on. If so, please let me know! I'd be more than willing to give you my thoughts. Leave me a message on this post or shoot me an email.

So long for now... and remember to have fun.

Facebook Fan Club.

My buddy Justin got me involved with facebook about a year ago. Often, right before the camera is brought to the photographers eye. Just before the realization hits a subject that this image will be a lasting impression for many years - a freeze happens!

Muscles tense.
Eyes pierce the air!

Where there once was a normal human now stands a frozen statue. While there are many reasons why we freeze when we get our portraits taken (at least professional portraits - I'm not speaking of those random photos for Facebook or MySpace.) like bad past experiences, thoughts of school picture days, not liking the way you look in photographs, the eternal nature of the portrait, etc. Basically, we don't want to look bad!

Let me reassure you, there is nothing to worry about because:

You went with a bond fide professional... you have chosen a professional photographer right?

You've seen the photographers portfolio and know they do outstanding work... nothing to worry about there.

The photographer is making pictures that represent you and your personality.

You've discussed your needs and desires before the photo was created.

Your photographer understands the frustrations and anxieties of the subject in front of his/her lens.

Your photographer understands posing and how to position the body so it appears more flattering if desired by the subject.

Your photographer isn't always behind the lens but has experience in front of a lens as well knowing exactly the way it feels to have a portrait made of them selves.

Your photographer knows that he as the photographer, not the camera, is the most important thing he has to make a great portrait!

If these things are true of the photographer you hire, you'll not be let down. It was wonderful. Working for a company today (Hairdirect.com) at their location I was allowed to partake in this massage benefit. I had a five minute chair massage and after I stood up from it, I felt like I had just had a 25-minute power nap. It was fantastic.

I don't expect a massage with every client. Every photography client -business or consumer - is unique and each location is just as unique.

Working on site, as I always do posses difficult challenges; some are easier to over come than others. You might dread the thought of me coming to your home, business or location with this preconceived mindset: My location just isn't photogenic. It's just to________. (Fill in the blank with any depressive word or term, ie: ugly, messy, rundown, plain, trashy - all words I've heard)

Be confident! My job is to find the best location within your location to make sure you have stunning images and portraits. It's my job and what I do. At the very least- get a hold of me and discuss your, ugly, messy, rundown, plain, trashy location that I'll have to take portraits in.

Just like the massage therapist made me feel like I just took a power nap in only 5-minutes by doing some great work, my job is to make you look fantastic no matter what the location.

Have fun!

*The massage therapist today was Tom Miller of Camp Hill, PA. He can come to your office or party and is a great morale booster. All the people at the Hairdirect office loved it! You can call him at (717) 972-8794. He was kind enough to give me permission to use it here on my blog. As always, whether you choose me or another photographer, I just want you to be knowledgeable in whomever you choose. I think Daphne has given some great tips here from her years of experience working with photographers. Enjoy!

Five tips for getting exactly the photographer you need

By Daphne Gray-Grant<u1:p></u1:p>

You've recently returned from an important family birthday party and you've dropped your film off at the photo shop. When you return an hour later, you eagerly rip open the envelope and pull out your pictures. You groan. The lighting is too bright, important people are out of focus, and worst of all, the photos just don't "capture" the great time you had at the party. Now re-visualize this same scenario. But imagine your disappointment if you'd actually paid a photographer to take the shots - and they were still rotten. <u1:p></u1:p>

As someone who's spent more than 25 years producing publications, I've had to oversee lots of photographers. Most of them have been pretty good and a few have been exceptional. But every once in awhile; I encountered a dud. And that's really bad news if you have a one-time event like a wedding or anniversary celebration, where there are no second chances. So let my experience help you. Here are five tips to help you get exactly the photographer you need and deserve. <u1:p></u1:p>

1) Get recommendations. This is an old piece of advice, but it's an excellent one. Ask family, friends and business acquaintances for photographers they've used and have been happy with. If you draw a blank, then turn to the yellow pages or the Internet. But be sure to get references and FOLLOW UP whether by phone or email. You may be surprised (pleasantly or otherwise) at what you learn. <u1:p></u1:p>

2) Examine the photographer's portfolio carefully. Make sure you see lots of examples of the KINDS of shots you want. It might help to think about photography like music. You wouldn't hire Elvis Costello if you wanted a James Brown sound. They're both great musicians -- just different genres. Photographers, too, tend to specialize. Some are top notch with portraits; some are better at landscapes; others excel at shooting products. Furthermore, some are best at formal shots while others shine with candids. Go with a photographer who specializes in the subject matter, and "look" you’re seeking. You don't just want a "good" photographer; you want the one who is exactly right for you. <u1:p></u1:p>

3) Don't shop on price alone. Of course price is important. It's always important. But before you set your budget, get a realistic idea of the range in your city or town. This might mean getting quotes from as many as five different photographers. Just be sure the quotes are apples versus apples. (Specify number of photos, time involved, film or digital, proofs, reprint rights etc.). Then, don't go with the least expensive. Would you pick the cheapest brain surgeon? Would you pick the cheapest roofing contractor? (Well, you might. But you'd be wrong.) The "cheapest" of anything can easily end up being the most expensive if the results are poor. <u1:p></u1:p>

4) Give the photographer specific examples of what you're looking for. Of course, you're familiar with the old expression "a photo is worth a thousand words." Well, this applies double to photographers. Photographers are visual people; otherwise they wouldn't be in their line of work. Thus, it only makes sense to communicate with them visually. I frequently troll the web or flip through dozens of magazines looking for photographs I can use to convey to photographers exactly the kind of "look & feel" I want for a specific job. Giving sample photos to photographer’s amounts to talking "their language" and it is one of the single most effective things you can do to guarantee a good result. <u1:p></u1:p>

5) Ask the photographer for explicit directions and allow the necessary time. Don't just tell the photographer what to do; ask him or her for advice. If it's a photo of you, ask about clothing, hair and makeup (yes, this applies to guys too.) Arrive on time or early and don't have a pressing appointment you have to rush off to. Good photography takes time; allow for it. <u1:p></u1:p>

The principles for selecting a photographer should be similar to those you'd use for hiring a contractor to renovate your home: Get recommendations; know what you want; don't go with either the cheapest or the most expensive bid; and communicate clearly and thoughtfully. <u1:p></u1:p>
Come to think of it, those are also excellent recommendations for any sort of relationship, including a marriage!

Daphne Gray-Grant offers practical advice on writing and editing for anyone who produces publications whether print or online. Every time I pass by this thing I smile. I was feeling a bit gloomy Tuesday night/Wednesday morning and I thought it would be as good a time as ever to drive by this thing and make a few images. I always wanted to photograph at night when the neons were shining and the slight dampness/fog in the air only added to the mystery and story of the photographs. What resulted were three very distinct images of the same subject. It only shows how a little imagination, a dash of inspiration and some creative thinking can make something beautiful. Not surprisingly my role will be as company photographer. I will be going on calls with the Fire Department to the scenes of accidents, fires, and other emergency situations to document the activities on the scene.

Photography plays an important role in emergency situations. Photo documentation can be used during investigations and court cases as visual proof of what the scene looked like and what occurred during the event. The Palmyra Fire Company has a web gallery where they post photos of as many scences they respond to as possible. You can view it here.

I'm pretty excited to join the Palmyra Fire Company and look forward to serving my local community in this way.

Here are some photos I took at the open house event last night.
<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; Or soon-to-be-senior. They document and celebrate the last 11-12 years of pre-college education. Senior photo photographers should keep this in mind. Creative senior portraits should tell a story about you and your life. More than likely, a lot of people will see these photos and this lasting impression will be remembered for many years to come.

This is a portrait I took of Nate. Nate learned to fly before he learned drive. This is a rare occasion and not many teenagers are able to make that claim. When I suggested that we take a photograph of him next to one of the Cessna aircrafts he flew in he jumped at the chance. The photograph was taken at Reigel Field Airport in Palmyra, PA. He contacted the owner/manager and had no problem being able to do this. We met at the Airfield early in the morning and spent an hour or so making photographs around the airport and plane.

This photograph is a result of that day. I am very proud of this photo and I know Nate loved it as well. It demonstrates how a portrait can be made that is about you as well as one that is of you.

I love this kind of portrait and believe you deserve it as well. I am more than happy to talk you about how I can make this kind of portrait for you or your senior any time.

Enjoy. Your clothing choice really can make all the difference in how the final image turns out. The next time you are ready to have your portrait made, remember these important thoughts.

Not everyone has to look identical. Almost everyone remembers being in or at least seeing a family portrait where everyone is wearing a clone outfit of the person next to them. It tends to feel too contrived. It’s more important to coordinate than to match. For example: A family of four might all wear khakis in lighter shades and pastel shirts and blouses. If the family is a father, mother, son and daughter than the mother might wear a soft pink blouse and the daughter a soft yellow blouse. The father may wear a light blue shirt and the son a pastel green. If at all possible, try and have everyone wear the same style.

Avoid patterns and logos. These types of clothes are distracting and pull the eye away from you, the subject of the portrait. Logos, especially sports teams and clothing brands, tend to date a photograph and after a few years it may turn into one of those photos where others point out “the fashion of the time”. Patterns such as flannels or lines in clothing can cheapen the look of the photograph. Patterns do sometimes work however, but rarely and you should talk with your photographer before the portrait is made so you can get his or her advice.

Cover up your skin. Long sleeves are the best choice even if you’re on-location in the summer. Long slacks or pants are usually a better option as well as our calves see the least amount of sun and can be a distracting pasty white. Covering up keeps our eyes away from the arms and legs and on our faces where the portrait needs to keep focus. This is an important point to remember when you’re considering your portrait.

Limit the amount of makeup. Too much makeup can often times be harmful in a photograph. Just about any photographer is able to achieve the look you want with the computer. Photographers can reduce wrinkles, lines and blemishes; add color to the face, etc. However, if you are still insistent, consult your photographer as he or she might be able to recommend someone that has experience applying makeup for film, video and photography.

Say no to vibrant colors. As a general rule, colors that are strong or bright, such as reds, fluorescents, and bright blues should be avoided. This point sometimes can be broken if your photographer thinks it appropriate. Whites and blacks can sometimes be too much as well, though not as often. Here again, consult your photographer.

NEVER, EVER wear a fake smile. We all think that photos will be better if we smile. This isn’t always true. Ultimately, the worst thing you can wear is a fake smile. Fake smiles often happen when someone really doesn’t want to be there. Teenagers and fathers are usually the ones guilty of this. Be sure everyone is in good spirits before the portrait session starts. And mothers, never tell your children or husband to smile while the photographer is taking the photographs. Allow the photographer to work and do what he or she does best.

With proper planning and these simple points your next portrait will turn out great!

Like always, have fun Central, PA!

Location Exhibit Announcement.

Just wanted to let you all know I have some of my portrait work on display at the Palmyra Jubilee Store and College Street Café They are very special as they are a milestone as you progress from adolescent to adult. In the end, the money you spend will be well worth it if you commission the right photographer that will capture the true you in this very important time of your life. With that in mind I have developed a few key points to remember as you search for a photographer.

Consider what is most important to you in the photograph. Knowing this will make it easier in your final decision of a photographer. Whether on-location photography, something totally different and alternative, traditional posing or just good expression- knowing what is important to you will help when you’re searching for a photographer.

View the photography. Do the images a photographer is showing appeal to you? The images the photographer is showing is the type of work he likes to do and finds most aesthetically pleasing. If you like what he has in his portfolio, there is a good chance you will both work well together.

Be sure you will have variety. Clothing changes, posing, and backdrops or locations all add to great senior photo choices. Will the photographer limit these things or will he give you an unlimited amount of time and clothing selection.

Know your options. A lot of photographers have standard packages. Packages are nothing more than a sales tool. They make it easier for you to make a purchase, yet they can be limiting. Other photographers have a la carte prices with extra options. For instance, I use the a la carte model which allows you to pick exactly what you want- but I also have albums, and I always have specials that allow you to get free prints with other purchases.

Is there a guarantee? Does a photographer offer any guarantee with his work? Be sure to know what your options are if you just don’t like the final results. Can you get your money back? Will you be forced to purchase photos you don’t like? This very well might be the determining factor in whom you choose to do business with.

Remember that you will never get this opportunity again. Senior photography should not only be of you but also be about you. There is a difference- one is just a portrait of your likeness and the other ads a representation of who you are- a story that has culminated over the past 4-6 years. By choosing the right photographer you shouldn’t be surprised if your senior photos are the ones your grandchildren will someday be asking for in your will. Scary huh?

Oh me oh my

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; I took this self-portrait for one of my first big assignments at Photo School.

Remember... it was during school and so we were sometimes pretty "creative".

This is a special photograph for me because by nature I'm a pretty modest fella. It speaks to who I really am though i think. A lot of people talked about it all year long even though it really wasn't the best self-portrait. Let me know what you think.

I don't drink Coke-Cola but...

Every once an a while photographers like to get out there and take some photographs that we aren't getting paid for. Some photographers have personal projects. Ongoing photo projests that of a subject, object, theme, what ever.

Though I have no real personal project going at this time (though ideas are stirring) I purchased a new lens the other day and went to my grandmothers house to see what I could capture. I wonder why this is? Is this the size that has become standard? Most people in even the most modest of dwellings I know can certainly find enough naked wall to hang a 16X20. most might even have enough to hang a 16X24.

Now I like to be honest and as such, I'll say this- larger prints do make us photographers more money. It only makes sense right? Photographers make the most money on large prints and selling albums. Albums are not cheap even for us to purchase. Sometime albums cost us as much as $300.00. So if you mark that up it might be sold to you for as much as $600.00-$800.00.

However, what might be worth examining is the fact that some of these photographers work pretty hard to earn that. And the event that was photographed, (Wedding, senior photography) is a pretty special time in ones life. We all see wedding photographers when we go to a wedding right? They are smiling and taking photographs, and then the day is over, right, and we never see them again. We just see the images. What might be worth noting, however, is that a typical wedding for a photographer might last a week or more. We edit each image, design an album, prep the images for printing. This all takes time. Lots of it.

You could go to a local department store or giant re-sale store to have your images made but usually get boring and sterile images that you'll forget after time.

I'm not quite sure where I want to go with this post. Maybe frustration has gotten the best of me. But if you're in the market for portraits, remember that a wall portrait or album is something that will not get stuffed in to the book shelf or shoebox only to be seen twenty years later by future desendent's. A wall portrait or album is a family heirloom that will be passed down and wanted by others. Remember as well that portraits, like fine art, appreciate over time. They may not gain monetary value or be counted as a financial asset, but they appreciate over time in sentimental and emotional value.

Food for thought.

Hallmark Open House

So today is the day I have been waiting for for quite some time. I attended the school I graduated from last June and was pleased to have some great conversations with a few students. These students are full of talent and were a great inspiration to me. Truly they will be fine photographers of the future. In light of this I would like to share a few quotes that have meant a lot to me and have helped me in my journey as a professional photographer.

1) There are many teachers who could ruin you. Before you know it you could be a pale copy of this teacher or that teacher. You have to evolve on your own. -Berenice Abbott

-- Not that they will or have but that we must be careful to listen to our heart and click our shutter from there. Don't mimic an instructor or teacher but take what they say and use it in your own way.

2) It's not the camera, but who's behind the camera. -Anonymous

-- Who ever this wise person was they got it right. It's easy to get caught up in what kind of photo gear we use (cannon vs nikon vs olympus; profoto vs photogenics vs home made lighting; macintosh vs PC; digital vs film) however in reality you do indeed MAKE a photograph and your gear makes little difference. The person you are will always determine the photos you create.

3) I cannot take portraits of actors because they pose. -Henri Cartier-Bresson

-- There is a time for posing, but be careful, for you might pose the entire personality out of your subject.

4) (But)...a lot of photographers think that if they buy a better camera they'll be able to take better photographs. A better camera won't do a thing for you if you don't have anything in your head or in your heart. -Arnold Newman

-- Are we starting to see a bit of a theme here?

5) If your pictures aren't good enough, you're not close enough. -Robert Capa, before he got too close to a mine that killed him, while covering Indochina.

-- Hey our passions drive us, sometimes too far. Don't let them kill you.

So I dedicate this post to the Hallmark Institute of Photography graduating class of 2007. It's rather exciting to think I'll be going to see old friends, the work of new students, and current news of the happenings there at school and of former school chums. I'll try and give you a play by play if I can score some good internet up there.

The occasion is an open house that is run entirely by the students. They are responsible for catering the event, giving demonstrations of the studios and the design and editing labs. What's more- the students get the chance to show off their work.

I might even try and snap a few pics myself so you can see the school and the crowd that goes there each year. That is if it's as popular as it was last year. We were pretty rad last year and it might be a few years before the school gets a student body like we were.

For all future mistakes, I'm Sorry!

Though I would like to think I am very knowledgeable when it comes to all things technological, the truth is, I have many failings. I just don't get it sometimes. This being my first post on what I hope to be a terrific and successful undertaking, I would like to say "I'm sorry", not just for any mistakes I will make here, but in my photographic career too. I will make a few mistakes, you may count on it, and through those mistakes I do hope to improve.

So forgive me. Welcome me.
